Mortgage Fraud

Protect Yourself from Real Estate Fraud

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your knowledge or consent to commit a crime, such as fraud or theft. A growing problem related to identity theft in Canada is real estate title fraud.

Every day, Canadians make efforts to protect their biggest investment – their home. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, it is still a very real possibility for someone to actually steal our homes.

Real estate title fraud is alarmingly easy to commit. Fraudsters pose as legitimate owners of a property, mortgage it to the hilt and make off with the money, leaving the real owners in for a horrifying shock when the lender contacts them to collect on the mortgage.

In most cases, legitimate owners have no idea that someone has filed a claim against the title of their property but the reality of those who find themselves the victim of this type of fraud awake to a living nightmare and the onus lies with them to prove that fraud has been committed.
